New Mexico is one of the lowest ranking states in terms of animal protection and animal welfare. We see the reality of this firsthand here in San Miguel County.

Many ordinary people are working tirelessly to try to protect and save animals from bad situations, but to truly change the state of animal welfare in our community will require action and leadership from our elected officials, and right now not enough is being done.

Laws need to be put in place by our representatives and enforced by law enforcement, funding needs to be allocated for programs like spay/neuter, veterinary care, and public education, and judges need to stop letting animal neglecters and abusers off the hook.

Please sign our petition to let our elected officials know it is time to step up For the Animals! -->

We, the People of Las Vegas and San Miguel County, call on our elected representatives to prioritize the animal welfare crisis in our community and put into place humane and sustainable measures to protect animal well-being, including:

  • Promoting spay/neuter and making it widely accessible and affordable to all

  • Providing training and pay to fully staff all Animal Control positions

  • Supporting adequate staffing and modernization of shelter facilities

  • Education to change our community culture to one that protects animals and prioritizes their well-being
